The Dao people’s paper-making profession appeared around the beginning of the 20th century, with most of the households working in the profession concentrated in Viet Quang town (Bac Quang district). Paper is often used to write petitions, make charms, print books used in ceremonies of coming of age, praying for peace, funerals, weddings… The main materials to make paper are young bamboo trees and vines available in nature. To make paper, it must go through the following stages: lime treatment, coating, drying, peeling… Thanks to that, although paper is very thin, it is more durable and tough than regular paper.
