A few words about Lung Khuy cave

Lung Khuy Cave, the first natural cave in Ha Giang, is known as the first cave in the plateau. Lung Khuy Cave contains a wild and mysterious beauty, the crystallization of stalactites and stalagmites formed and developed over hundreds of millions of years.

Many geological studies show that Lung Khuy cave was formed from the development of limestone mountains on ancient seas more than 400 million years ago. Along with the cave, there are many surrounding terrains such as high mountains, valleys and sinkholes.

The terrain is mountainous and valleys connect one another, with the flat area far below is Tam Son town.

Lung Khuy Cave was discovered by local people in 2015 and began to be exploited for tourism at the end of 2015. Because the cave entrance is only about 1.5m high, about 1m wide, and is surrounded by trees and vines, it is completely difficult to see… so it still retains its complete wildness until today. When the cave tourist attraction was formed, it was expanded into a small gate, with a sign hanging, inside there was a path for visitors to visit, with lights on the stone blocks…

Inside Lung Khuy cave, there is a very complex structure system, a diverse stalactite system. According to published geological statistics, the cave is 517.5m wide, 31m deep, with a total area of up to 14,983m2. There are 4 exit systems at altitudes from 850 to 1100m. However, with the above statistics, visitors cannot fully explore Lung Khuy cave.

Name of Lung Khuy cave

The name Lung Khuy Cave comes from the language of the Mong people. Lung Khuy means dragon in the rock crevice and is also associated with the story of life, activities and development of this land. Lung Khuy Cave has the same
name as Lung Khuy village, the long-standing residence of the Mong people. This is also a mountain associated with the spiritual life of the Mong people, so there are many stories about this place.

The story begins when this highland often encountered prolonged droughts, causing hardship for plants, birds, animals and people. People went to the forest to pray for rain to have water.

Luckily, the people discovered a small stream of water in the cave – the people called it the magic well and it was guarded by a dragon god. The dragon god had the form of a Mong boy; he asked the sky to make it rain so that the water in the cave would always be full, creating a source of life for the trees, the water would become clearer and clearer and the Mong girls would bathe in the magic water and become beautiful.

The dragon god fell in love with the Mong girl and married her, lived and had children in the cave – over many generations, creating a Mong village at the foot of Lung Khuy mountain.

Later, the holy well in Lung Khuy cave was worshiped by the Mong people here. During holidays and Tet, Mong people from all over the region often come here to ask for holy water to worship their ancestors, praying for a healthy family year, giving birth to lucky children, praying for favorable weather, and good crops as a custom of remembering the source.

Journey to Lung Khuy Cave

Lung Khuy Cave is located in Lung Khuy village, Quan Ba commune, Quan Ba district, Ha Giang province. It is about 6km from Ha Giang city and about 8km from Quan Da town.

From Ha Giang city, I followed Highway 4C to Quan Ba town. In town, I stopped for lunch to regain strength to explore Lung Khuy cave.

The restaurant in town has many dishes for you to choose from, with the menu outside usually used for foreign guests, Vietnamese people are often invited by the host to the kitchen to show you their own dishes, the price of rice here is calculated based on the number of dishes I ordered, the price for 2 people fluctuates around 150,000 VND. After lunch, I followed the map to get to the entrance to the cave.

At the entrance below, there is a local family that keeps vehicles for 5,000 VND, with directions to the cave. When you arrive, drive in, leave your belongings and follow the trail to the cave. Moving along the open road, the higher you go, the clearer you will see the mountain valley below; depending on the season, the landscape here is different, the time I went was autumn so the grass and hills were a bit yellow, the air started to get cold, and the rain was sudden.

After 30 minutes of traveling, we arrived at the cave entrance. There was a shop selling drinks and chairs to rest. The ticket price was 10,000 VND/ticket and drinks were 10,000 VND/bottle. We sipped soft drinks, watched the rain, and enjoyed the peaceful beauty of Ha Giang.

The small corner shop near the cave entrance sells drinks and collects tickets. These railings date back to the French period, as this was once a place where the French could observe the entire town below.

Coming to Lung Khuy cave, I have not seen any special features, but when following the path inside, the vastness and uniqueness of nature here captivated me, the sediments of the rocks and the development of not only the stalactites but also the diversity.

The unique shapes that you can see such as stone pillars, stone lions, dragon heads, dragon scales, waterfalls flowing like silk ribbons, everything here makes you constantly think about the unique, magical shapes of the rocks. Thanks to the help of the rows of lights, this place is more sparkling, the lights are not many, not too bright, but it is a masterpiece of nature, the more you look at it, the more fascinated you are, no image can fully reveal the beauty of this place, only by feeling it can you understand.

The path is a series of iron bridges, lined with quite slippery nets, the cave is wet and has many water drops falling from stalactites.

The shimmering part on the stalactites is created by water combined with lights, the shape of the stalactites resembles flowers.

The glitter blocks always have many different colors from gray, blue, ivory… to brown and black.

In addition to the massive stalactites, there are also unique single stalactites like this.

In contrast to the rainy, windy atmosphere of autumn in Ha Giang, the cave is peaceful, calm and warm. Occasionally, drops of water from stalactites fall into the lake, creating an echoing sound.

After experiencing Lung Khuy cave – this place gives me a more special feeling about Ha Giang tourism, the peace and beauty of the rocks is always something that captivates me.

Notes when visiting and checking in Lung Khuy cave

The road up to the cave is high, with many steps and the inside is rugged and damp, so when moving, choose low-heeled shoes or sneakers for easy movement and sightseeing.

From the parking lot to Lung Khuy cave is about 30 minutes away, anyone can conveniently get here.

You should wear neat clothes and leave your belongings at the parking lot for comfort and convenience when exploring the cave.

Bring drinks and food if you want to stop for a long time on the mountain to enjoy the scenery and wander around. If you don’t bring any, you can rest assured that before entering the cave, there is a cafe with an ideal view.

When moving in the cave, look carefully before moving because there are many narrow passages and low-lying rocks that are easy to collide with.

Visitors should bring cameras, camcorders, phones and lighting equipment to easily save beautiful pictures. And especially bring light filters to take better pictures. When choosing to explore Lung Khuy cave, bring a flashlight to explore the many small caves here, I find it quite long and deep.

Special: Many caves are very deep, dark, without knowledge and equipment we should not enter because it is very dangerous.

A memorable experience during my trip to Ha Giang was exploring and learning about Lung Khuy cave, a destination that I think everyone has forgotten. For those who love the beauty of peace, wildness and tranquility, Lung Khuy Cave, the first plateau, will be an ideal place to find experiences. When coming to Ha Giang on your upcoming trip, don’t forget to spend some time on your journey to explore this place.
