Moon Festival – 15th of August Lunar Calendar

A bright candidate for entertainment occasions, the Moon Praying Festival of the Tay ethnic group takes place in a very unique way. Also celebrated on the Mid-Autumn Festival on August 15, the Moon Praying Festival has folk songs, folk games, and traditional cuisine that are only found in ethnic minorities. In addition, there are offerings at sacred temples to pray for a full moon.

On the evening of the 14th day of the 8th lunar month, when the full moon illuminates everything in the village, the village elders will organize a “worship to the village’s land princess”. On the evening of the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, when the moon begins to rise, the villagers will gather in the yard to pay their respects. Some others will circle around the worshiping table until the moon-welcoming ceremony is completed.

After the ceremony, the festival is held with more participants. It is mainly a celebration party with diverse local cuisine such as five-color sticky rice, pork, bamboo rice, salted plums, etc. After eating, the villagers will play games, showing off their ingenuity and strength. The festival ends under the red firelight and late-night confidences.
